In cosmetics that you buy in stores, you will often find an ingredient called Sodium Bicarbonate. It is baking soda, one of the oldest and most popular natural cosmetics with a very wide, beneficial effect. What are the main uses of soda in cosmetics? How does it affect the skin, hair and nails?

What is baking soda and what properties does it have?

What exactly is baking soda? It is a white, crystalline, odorless powder (salt). This inorganic compound is known by various names, including: sodium bicarbonate, sodium bicarbonate or bicarbonate, NaHCO ₃ . In home conditions, baking soda is simply called cooking soda and is used, among others, to for cleaning, baking and preparing mouth rinses.

What properties does baking soda have? Soda powder is poorly soluble in water. When heated or combined with acids, it begins to release carbon dioxide. Sodium solutions, used in cosmetics and medicine, have a very versatile effect:

• eliminate bacteria,
• brighten the skin,
• regulate the pH of the skin and organs of the digestive system,
• soothe inflammation,
• reduce swelling after insect bites,

What are the properties of baking soda in cosmetics?

Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Hydroxide and Sodium Laureth Sulfate - do they mean the same thing?

Anyone who has looked at the composition of their cosmetics at least once has come across the names: Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Hydroxide or Sodium Laureth Sulfate. Do they all mean baking soda? Of course not! Among the listed substances, only bicarbonate is the only one. Under the name Sodium Hydroxide there is sodium hydroxide, more widely known as caustic soda. Sodium Laureth Sulfate is otherwise sodium alkyl ether sulfate, a surfactant with foaming properties.

People have been producing cosmetics with the addition of substances of mineral origin for many hundreds of years.
