Stearin - what is it?

Stearin is the common name for stearic acid, which consists mainly of palmitic acid and stearic acid derived from beef tallow (gr. stear - tallow) and a small amount of unsaturated acids. It is produced in the process of hydrogenation of fatty acids.

Sterine is in solid form in the form of powder or small flakes of white or cream color. Animal origin makes stearin a safe product without any toxic properties.

Stearin is a product that has been used by humans for many, many years, but its production in Poland began only in 2014 at Zakłady Chemiczne Azoty Chorzów SA, which is still the only producer of stearin in our country.

What is stearin used for?

Stearin is mainly used as a refining additive or changing parameters in various types of mixtures.

In the rubber industry, such as the production of gaskets, tires, conveyor belts, stearin fulfills the tasks of: plasticizer, dispersant (improver of fragmentation), mineral fillings and activators of vulcanization improvers. In addition, using colloquial language, it is a rubber softener.

Stearin is also one of the main ingredients in the production of candles. The task it has to perform is to harden the wax, increase the melting point, which affects the burning length of the candle, and increases its durability and gives crystallization of the surface.

Stearin is also an additive in the production of soaps and cosmetics such as: shaving foams, creams, lotions, balms, etc. Soaps made with stearin receive greater hardness and oiling properties as well as a pearly sheen. Creams, on the other hand, have moisturizing properties and protect the skin from excessive water loss. Stearin also acts as an emulsion stabilizer, thanks to which it protects the cream against stratification and extends its shelf life.

Other uses of stearin are: production of crayons, production of medicines, direct use in cosmetic procedures.

Stearin is another product in our offer, after water glass, whose application possibilities are so wide that it is difficult to clearly classify it to any industry. However, the most important thing seems to be that it is an ecological and natural product.

On the Internet you can find a whole lot of pages where you will learn how to make candles, soap or a healthy and safe cream at home. I cordially invite you to work and play with stearin.
