Aspartame, an artificial sweetener, was invented in 1965 by James M. Schlatter, a chemist working for GD Searle & Company. The chemist obtained aspartame as part of his research in the search for a cure for ulcers. In 1985, the pharmaceutical company GD Searle was acquired by Monsanto, which continued to produce aspartame under the name NutraSweet Company.
