Potassium iodide is a chemical compound with the formula KI, very soluble in water and glycerol, slightly soluble in ethanol. Potassium iodide is a crystalline solid that separates into iodine and potassium during the electrolysis process. Potassium iodide is one of the elements legally allowed as a food additive. Potassium iodide or potassium iodate are used to enrich table salt with valuable iodine. In medicine, it occurs as an element necessary for the human body, maintaining the hormonal balance and ensuring the proper functioning of the thyroid gland. Iodine deficiency in the human body sometimes also causes congenital mental retardation. According to the guidelines of the Ministry of Health, 100 g of table salt should contain 2.3 ± 0.77 mg of iodine, which corresponds to 30 ± 10 mg of potassium iodide or 39 ± 13 mg of potassium iodate in 1 kg of table salt. The goal is to eliminate iodine deficiency in Polish society. Potassium iodide solution is the well-known Lugol solution developed by Jean Lugol in 1829, it is used for therapeutic purposes. Pure potassium iodide is widely used in pharmacy and medicine. Potassium iodide purity in accordance with BP/EP/USP/IP standards. Application of potassium iodide: In the chemical industry, it is used to carry out organic syntheses. Trace amounts are used in the food industry as an addition to table (iodized) salt.
