Baking soda, E 500 (ii) sodium bicarbonate occurs in the form of a white crystalline powder. As a food additive, it has leavening properties by releasing gas (carbon dioxide) to increase the volume of dough; as an acidity regulator, it changes or controls the acidity or alkalinity of a food; as a carrier in food enzymes and nutrients. Baking soda is also used in households as a universal cleaning agent. It is an ecological product, recommended by allergy sufferers. As a dry powder, paste or solution, it is an excellent agent for maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen (cleaning the gas stove, microwave, removing burnt residue from pots, removing coffee and tea deposits, removing odours from the refrigerator, cleaning tableware from deposits) and also bathrooms (cleaning tiles and grouts, cleaning shower cabins) and cleaning silverware, fittings, refreshing carpets and doormats. Also for removing unpleasant odors from shoes, rugs and for unclogging pipes, sink drains, washbasins or bathtubs.
