Cleaning and decontamination of a dug well

Publish date: 2017-01-26

The process of cleaning a dug well is based not only on the physical removal of objects lying in it, e.g. as a result of a flood wave, but also on washing the inside of the well of dirt. The purification process should begin with collecting water from the well and cleaning its bottom from sludge or sand residues. Then, fill the bottom with gravel (after washing) or sand (at least 10 cm thick) and fill any defects in the well structure with concrete.

After cleaning, you need to proceed to the disinfection of the well - a solution of sodium hypochlorite will be ideal for this. To accurately determine the amount of solution, measure the depth of the water in the well - a pole or sinker will help. Then it is enough to use a simple proportion - 150 g of solution should be used for every meter of water depth*. The disinfection process begins with scrubbing the casing (water + two teaspoons of hypochlorite solution), then, after filling the well with water, mix the hypochlorite solution with water and pour it into the well. After 24 hours, drain the water from the well (until the chlorine smell disappears).

*assuming that the diameter of the well is 80 cm - a difference of +10 cm in diameter means the need to add another 50 g of solution!
