How to disinfect the greenhouse in an effective way?

Publish date: 2017-01-26

Sulfur dioxide is a useful element when gassing greenhouses or polytunnels. Such a treatment should be carried out immediately after the end of the growing season of plants, but before the liquidation of the crop itself. It is worth gassing the greenhouse at least once every 12 months.

Greenhouse gassing - step by step.

1. Sulfur mixing. To begin with, mix the sulfur with a potassium compound, such as saltpeter or permanganate.
2. Then, put the sulfur on the metal trays, placing them one by one in different places inside the greenhouse.

3. Kindling. The mixtures arranged in this way should be ignited, starting with the plate farthest from the entrance to the greenhouse.

How to choose the amount of sulfur when disinfecting the greenhouse?

The ideal proportion is 15g/cubic meter of room. For larger rooms, the following proportion can be used:

- 2 kg of sulfur

- 0.4 kg of potassium permanganate/100 g of potassium nitrate

It is worth remembering that sulfur alone is not enough in the gassing process - additives are necessary to accelerate its combustion.

Perfect conditions for burning.

Under what conditions is it best to perform gassing? The temperature must be above 10 degrees Celsius (around 20 degrees is ideal). In addition, ensure that doors, windows and ventilators are tightly closed - to prevent sulfur dioxide from escaping into other rooms. The gas is very harmful - its fumes are extremely poisonous, both for people and plants.

Why Use Sulfur?

The main advantage of such action is the ease of carrying out such a process. To do it, just select a few dishes (note - they must be non-flammable), pour denatured alcohol on them and light them. Sulfur allows you to effectively remove pests.
