How to prepare the soil for blueberry cultivation?

Publish date: 2017-01-26

Blueberry is very demanding when it comes to soil acidity - the ideal pH is 3.5-4.0. It is difficult to obtain such a level in agricultural fields, so it is worth taking care of soil acidification on your own.

Sulfur to the rescue

In the process of soil acidification, sulfur will be an invaluable material. Just remember to choose the right proportions, which are as follows:

  • For sandy soils - from 5 to 12 kg of sulfur (reaction 4.2-6.0; acidity 3.5)
  • For heavy soils - from 15 to 35 kg of sulfur (reaction 4.2-6.0; acidity 3.5)
  • For soils with a higher level of acidity, the amount of sulfur decreases proportionally (details in the table below the text)

When to use sulfur?

In order to effectively acidify the soil, this process should be carried out no later than 12 months before the planned start of cultivation or 3.4 months before (in the case of a low dose of sulfur). Granular sulfur is ideal for this purpose - the wind does not blow it away from the field, and besides, it quickly displaces calcium from the soil.
