The substrate for horse riding - how to prepare?

Publish date: 2017-01-26

Good ground in the manege or in the paddock is essential. Such a substrate must not freeze in winter. This is because there is a risk of the animal slipping, and apart from the fact that such a slip can cause a serious injury to the animal itself, falling from a horse is not pleasant and safe, especially when a child or a novice rider is sitting on the horse. The substrate intended for horse riding must not be dusty. Dust floating in the air takes all the fun out of driving. May cause coughing and cause or worsen allergy symptoms. In addition, settling on the clothes of riders and trainers causes their unsightly appearance. Grooming the horse and row after such a "dusty ride" requires much more attention. Dust in the air is also a greater chance of nerfing even the calmest steed. "A horse is also a man" and if a speck of dust falls into his eye or lungs, he may panic and it's not hard to be unlucky. The ground in the manege and in the paddock must be friendly to the horse's hooves. It cannot destroy or injure them. The substrate must also not be "toxic" to the environment in any way. Particularly in the paddock during downpours, the flowing water must not wash out substances dangerous to the surrounding greenery, animals and people.

Obtaining such a surface is not easy. Chemistry comes in handy here. Magnesium chloride added to the substrate in the amount of 300 g to 2 kg per 10 m2 will soften the soil, bind dust and water, while drying the substrate, it does not damage the horse's hooves and is completely neutral to the natural environment. In addition, by binding water, magnesium chloride generates large amounts of heat. Thus, it actively defrosts the substrate. The more ice thaws, the more water is formed and the more water is absorbed by the strongly hygroscopic magnesium chloride, generating more heat. So the more ice, the less ice.

Magnesium chloride is a clever answer to all the problems of the paddock and riding arena.
