POLIkol 3350PF belongs to the group of polyoxyethylene glycols. The product meets the stringent quality requirements set out in the latest edition of the European Pharmacopoeia, thanks to which it can be classified as macrogols. The commercial product is a white to pale yellow wax with a low odor and a congealing point of approximately 53-57°C.
PEGs in solid form, meeting the requirements of the pharmacopoeia, can be used in many pharmaceutical applications. They are used, among others, in the production of tablets as binders/plasticizers or as solubilizers, carriers of the active substance. The combination of POLIkol 3350PF (in the form of wax) with liquid, low-molecular polyethylene glycols (e.g. POLIkol 400PF) in the right ratio leads to a blend with a greasy consistency, which is the basis for the production of ointments.
POLIkols are characterized by very good solubility in water. These substances are not absorbed by the body, and at the same time they are a very good solvent for substances with osmotic activity. The US Pharmacopeia monograph precisely defines the composition of the mixture of PEG 3350 with the appropriate electrolyte, which is used as a laxative.
