Phthalic anhydride (phthalic acid anhydride) is a raw material with a wide range of applications in organic synthesis. Today it is produced in the process of dehydration, i.e. dehydration of phthalic acid. It comes in the form of flakes, white powder or alloy. In the plastics industry, it is used for the production of plasticizers and softeners. The action of plasticizers reduces the intermolecular interaction, chain friction against each other and increases the mobility of polymer chains. The resulting products are durable and flexible at the same time. One of the important plasticizers obtained from phthalic anhydride are bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, di-isononyl phthalate. Phthalic anhydride is also used in industry for the production of alkyd paints and varnishes, as a component of alkyd resins from which alkyd paints are made. Phthalic paints belong to varnish products that dry as a result of interaction with oxygen. Phthalic paints wet the substrate well, they are coatings with good adhesion, flexibility and high resistance to weather conditions. Phthalic anhydride also used in the production of anthraquinone and its derivatives. Phenolphthalein is formed by the condensation of phenol and phthalic acid. Phthalic anhydride is used in the pharmaceutical industry for the production of drugs. Phthalic acid anhydride is a precursor of reagents helpful in organic synthesis. Used in the production of some dyes, such as Fluorosein. It is a fluorescent green dye from the group of phthalein dyes obtained by condensation of phthalic anhydride with phenol, resoricin.
